THE PEOPLE OF KWAKWRANYA WE

There are four categories of people which constitute the present day Kwakwranya We in “general” and not Nii Anyetei Kwakwranya I descendants “only” as was explained earlier. The Categories are as follows:

  1. The youth of the Sowah stalk from Akoto We who started the “Prama So” home; all of whose descendants can be installed as Family head and Asafoatse of Kwakwranya We accordingly.
  2. The descendants of Anyetei Sowah Aku an offspring of one of the youth from Akoto We on whom the rulership of La was conferred with the stool name Nii Anyetei Kwakwranya I as a result of his bravery defence of the La state. The descendants of these stalks of people are the only ones who can be installed as La Mantse when the chieftaincy falls on Abese.
  3. The people who were given to Anyetei Sowah Aku (Nii Anyetei Kwakwranya I) to serve him and the Kwakwranya stool.
  4. Nieces and nephews (yei abii) and other clan members who opted to be part of Kwakwranya We by adoption including other strangers who were received and accommodated in the house.

After establishment of the “Prama So” home, the Danes came and cited a storey building on the compound for the first school to start in La. Then the “Prama So” (compound) became known as “Saun Kpono”.  In the event when the bravery of Anyetei Sowah Aku took him to Akwamu to defend the La state, he stayed away for six years negotiating for peace. During this period the people of La thought he was dead and subsequently performed his funeral rites in his absence.

It was said that Anyetei went and lodged with one Appiah who assisted him to carry out the peace negotiations; as such Anyetei wished to show acknowledgement to Appiah by attaching the name Appiah to the names of one of his Sons, which is carried over. After the sixth year Anyetei came back duly accomplishing the peace negotiations.

Having risked his life in defence of the La State, the then La Mantse, Saki conferred the chief on Anyetei and His Descendants only to succeed him since without his intervention the La State would have been attacked by the Akwamus and renderred desolate. Anyetei Sowah Aku’s stool name was therefore connected to his bravery in defence of the La State. Kwakwranya incidentally originated from the Akan statement “wu ko ku na wu nyaae” meaning “you went to fight and you had it”

After Anyetei Sowah Aku acquired the above name and brought honour and statute to the “Prama So” then it became known as KWAKWRANYA WE.
